| This is Ariel at 22. She lives on her own, has for the last few years. She worries about money more than she should, her desk and table are messy, and there are wires all over her room. Her bed is made. With clean laundry in a disarrayed pile on top. She had a boyfriend the past three years, grew up a bit. A lot. She's not sure if she can remember her nine-year-old self, wonders vaguely if she would be disappointed if she could see herself now. Maybe, maybe not. A lot of things have changed since then. She'd still recognize herself, though, and that's what matters. It's the rainy night after a beautiful day, summer stretching out before her, the last summer in this chunk of her life, and that's exciting but also gives her pause for thought. Sitting here, listening to a pianist's rendering of a score from a popular video game that she has never played. Not the way her parents did it - but that doesn't make it wrong. Gears click and change with the times, and she knows she's just the newest incarnation in a long line of those people who are swept along by its inexorable mechanism. It's dark, but within that dark are a myriad of possibilities that may come to light. That's cool. That's fine. That's something she has to look forward to. She's sitting here writing this with a headache and enjoying the slight chill in the breeze coming through the broken blinds in her window. Later on in life she will look back on this moment as a sort of encapsulation of her life at this point. Nostalgia. She'll forget that she had a headache and focus on the feeling of contentment, however fleeting. | ||||||
